Top 10 Recipes and 5 Food Blogger Fails of 2017

Top 10 recipes on Away From the Box in 2017! Also includes never before seen content – recipes that didn’t make it to the blog!

Well, 2017 has been quite a ride. This year I’ve redesigned the site, celebrated AFTB’s first birthday, weathered a hurricane, supported worthy causes, contributed to some great publications, and shared 55 recipes with you! After this year, I thought we could all use a bit of fun. So I decided to run some analytics to see what you all liked the most.

These are the most clicked, most shared recipes of 2017* – and because we all know each other so well, I’m also sharing some fails. Things that either were just bad, or were otherwise unfit to put on the blog. Don’t judge me too harshly – even food bloggers have massive fails!

*some of my recipes published in 2016 continued to do very well in 2017. Since we didn’t do a 2016 list I’m including them this year.

And the fails, in no particular order:

Sweet & Spicy Teriyaki Burger

If I could get it right, this burger would be amazing. But I just couldn’t get the patty to the right thickness and the combination of flavors was lacking. Back to the drawing board!

Egg Soufflé

This one I wanted to adapt from another recipe, but you know how a soufflé is supposed to be light, airy, fluffy and tall? This was flat, sad, and bland. As one of my friends put it, it’s a sou-flat!

Quesadilla Burger

These didn’t taste terrible or anything, but the sauce I tried putting in the quesadilla curdled (blergh) and I ran into the same issue as the other burger. I needed a better patty.

Chicken Enchiladas Verdes

So to make a good enchilada, you have to fry the tortillas slightly before rolling. I couldn’t quite nail this. Mine came out too oily and not soft like the best ones do. The salsa verde on top, however, is incredible and I make it all the time.

Mini Egg Bites

Another recipe I wanted to adapt from a book, but maybe I was just having an off day. I had QUITE a time with these. They were simultaneously really oily and managed to stick to the muffin tin. Flavor was decent, but not quite mind-blowing.

So that’s it! I can promise you there’s so much more than what I’ve shared here – this is just all that I captured on film. How was your year? And what would you like to see more of in 2018? Let me know in the comments below!

Cheers!

until next time. x
